Toward the end of the season, it seemed unlikely that Miso Brecko would return for the start of the 2015-16 season. After dropping to second choice at right back, the EffZeh captain for the last three seasons ended up with 19 appearances on the year, only because his young Polish rising star of a replacement suffered a season-ending injury to make Brecko again the starter for the final six games of the year.
“I have experienced better years in Köln,” said the captain when discussing his future with the club, with which he remains under contract until next summer. “I do not yet know what will happen. I spent no time thinking about it during the season.”
When Brecko was substituted in the season finale against VfL Wolfsburg, the home fans saluted him as if they assumed he would be leaving. A little later, much was made (by the local press which has a reputation for sometimes making much of little) of the fact that Brecko was the first player to leave the season-end celebration.
But now that Brecko has had a bit of time away from the situation in the Cathedral City and logged 90 minutes in Slovenia’s heartbreaking 2:3 loss to England in Euro 2016 qualification play, word from Brecko’s camp seems to indicate the player will return to his club when the 1. FC Köln reconvenes for season preparations.
“The FC is planning with Brecko; and Brecko plans with Köln,” were reportedly the words agent Karl Herzog gave to BILD about his client’s upcoming footballing plans.
As long as Olkowski is healthy, Brecko will likely return to being second choice at right back, with perhaps the odd cameo when Stöger is experimenting. At 31-year-old, his best footballing days are likely behind him, but keeping him in the squad retains a presence that made two different coaches give him the captain’s armband, even when the writing was on the wall last year that he probably was going to see his role greatly diminished.
Whatever your opinion on Brecko’s abilities at this point, he was an important figure in returning the club to the first division and deserves respect for that, if not also under our general “Einmol EffZeh, Immer EffZeh” policy.
Besides, who on the club knows his way around Disney better than Miso?
