NEXT! Louis Schaub is Second New FC in Two Days

The FC introduced a new face for the second-consecutive day when the signing of Louis Schaub was announced Wednesday.“Louis is a multifunctional, technical player, who can play in all attacking positions in midfield. He already has a lot of experience under his belt for his age and stills shows plenty of promise, says FC Managing Director Armin Veh. “I am convinced that he can help us with his quality and that he will receive a welcome reception from our team and coaching staff in order to further develop.”

Having joined SK Rapid Wien’s youth ranks in 207, Schaub has already logged 203 appearances for one of the Austrian Bundesliga’s top clubs, collecting 25 goals in 159 league matches. 16 in Europa League competition, and another six in Austrian Cup play. In his eight caps for Austria, he has delivered five goals including one in each of his three World Cup-qualifier appearances.

Schaub also is a public favorite, at least among readers of Kronen Zeitung. He has been voted “Footballer of the Year” by readers of the Austrian daily newspaper the last two years.

As was the case with Sobiech the day before, a four-year deal was part of the move. Unlike with Sobiech, Schaub did not arrive as a free transfer. Both clubs have agreed to not disclose financial terms of the move. Transfermarkt, however, lists Schaub’s value at €4 million.

“1. FC Köln is a big club with sensational fans and a unique atmosphere,” says Schaub. “My talks with the club representatives convinced me to join the club. Following a great time in Vienna, I would like to take the next steps in my development with FC and play my part in achieving the goals of the club.”

Louis is the son of former Bundesliga player Fred Schaub, who cemented his place as an Eintracht Frankfurt icon by scoring a UEFA Cup-clinching goal against Borussia Mönchengladbach in the return leg of the all-German final. Though his father perished in a car collision in which eight-year-old Louis was a passenger, escaping with a broken collarbone as the worst of his injuries, Louis believes he must credit Fred with his passion for the game.

“Unfortunately, the time was too short to play or train a lot with him,” said Schaub in Heute last May. “But I think I have the talent from him. I have had football-playing in my blood since I was small.”

Louis was not the only one to get the football bug from Fred, though. Older brother Fabian is a striker for FC Buchonia Flieden in Germany’s fifth tier.

Born in Fulda, about 100 kilometers northeast of Frankfurt, Schaub has long kept an eye on the German Bundesliga as his “favorite” and as a younger player modeled his game on that of Mario Götze.

Götze is still a few classes stronger than I, but we are a little bit similar,” said Schaub to Austrian news site Kurier in 2014. “He does unbelievable things; I watch for things I can learn and attempt them in training.
