The FC on Tuesday officially announced the acquisition of Lasse Sobiech as the first new arrival of the summer in preparation for next season’s promotion race.
The 27-year-old central-defender arrives from FC St. Pauli on a free transfer, despite efforts of the Hamburg-based club to keep the player who had become the anchor of their defense.
“I was offered a lot of great things to stay here and tried to open every door for me,” said Sobiech back in March, as rumors of a deal to move to Köln had surfaced. “There are many things that played a role, but I do not want to go into the specific reasons. ”
With 15 goals in 118 league matches the last four seasons at St. Pauli, the FC gains a player acknowledged to have become one of the top defenders in the 2. Bundesliga, potentially having made him too expensive for St. Pauli’s notoriously modest player budget. The four-year deal that brings Sobiech to Köln indicates the lanky (6’5″, or a bit taller than Sörensen) defender comes not only to give the team an instant influx of second-division experience (see Daniel Halfar from last promotion campaign), but also to become a fixture for the next first-division iteration of the FC.
“Lasse is a very experienced defender with great character,” says FC Managing Director Armin Veh. “He takes on responsibility and has the ambition to take the path with us back to the Bundesliga.”
Born on the outskirts of Dortmund, Sobiech developed through Borussia Dortmund’s youth system, eventually becoming a regular for the BVB’s second squad for two seasons, scoring one goal in 55 appearances between the 3. Liga and Regionalliga West (fourth division). Despite his extended run in the second division with St. Pauli, Sobiech arrives to Köln with intentions of building on his Bundesliga CV, which currently lists 2 goals in 24 matches for SpVgg Greuther Fürth and one goal in ten appearances for Hamburger SV.
“FC is an ambitious club with ambitious goals,” says Sobiech. “That is exactly the challenge I was seeking for my next stop. I want to achieve promotion with FC next season.”
Lasse Sobiech was born on 18 January 1991 in Schwerte and received his academy training at Borussia Dortmund. The center-back has played a combined 34 Bundesliga matches for SpVgg Greuther Fürth and Hamburger SV. The 27-year-old has featured in 131 competitive matches for FC St. Pauli in the second division and has scored 16 goals in the process.
