Jonas Hector returned to the relative comfort and safety of the Geißbockheim from his trip to Paris with the German National Team with a bruised thigh but thankfully nothing worse considering the events of Friday night in Paris.
Hector remains unavailable to both Joachim Löw and Peter Stöger due to the injury that forced an early departure from Germany’s 2:0 loss to France. Though the left back will neither travel with the DFB to the Netherlands for Tuesday’s test match nor yet participate in team training, his status for Saturday’s home has yet to be determined.
A failure to make the squad against Mainz would mark Hector’s first missed time of the season and first in a match that mattered since September 2013 (an 0:4 win in Cottbus). Like several regulars, Hector did not play in the 2014-15 season finale with nothing at stake (2:2 against VfL Wolfsburg).
As far as Hector’s mental state from overnighting in the Stade de France while the French capital was under attack by terrorists, Stöger says, “I have spoken with Jonas and he gives an impression of stability.”
Returning to training after missing the last two matches is Yannick Gerhardt. The young midfielder with the quickly rising profile suffered a bruised foot during the match at Bayern and should be available Saturday.
Likewise, Pawel Olkowski is back to full training after missing the last two matches with muscular issues. Whether Stöger opts to keep Marcel Risse in the defensive row after serving well in Olkowski’s stead remains to be seen.
Also back in training after brief absences were Leonardo Bittencourt and Kazuki Nagasawa.
Mergim Mavraj, who has yet to be available to Stöger this season, played 90 minutes with the U21 squad Saturday in their 2:1 win over TuS Erndtebrück, signalling that he is fully healthy and ready for duty, at least physically, with the Bundesliga side when called upon. Mavraj, along with team captain Matthias Lehmann, spent Tuesday with the “regenerative unit,” but both are expected to return to team training Wednesday.
