Kicker has selected 1. FC Köln striker Anthony Modeste for their first “Elf des Spieltages” (literally, “eleven of the match day”) for his role in delivering the Billy Goats a 3:1 road victory over VfB Stuttgart to open the season.
FC Bayern’s Thomas Müller was the other forward chosen by Germany’s most-prominent sports publication for the honor.
Modeste was the only Köln player to make the cut.
In his first Bundesliga match for the effzeh since moving to Köln this summer from TSG Hoffenheim, Modeste beat Przemysław Tytoń to a well-placed Leonardo Bittencourt, ultimately taking a foul from the Polish keeper and winning a penalty, which he converted himself.
With Köln holding onto a one-goal lead late in added time, Kevin Vogt cleared the ball from near Köln’s goal line to near the center line where Modeste beat Adam Hlousek in an aerial battle and bolted toward the Stuttgart goal with Yuya Osako running to his right. Modeste held the ball long enough to force Tyton to commit, but not so long he didn’t have time to slide the ball to his running partner for an easy game-finisher.
