A sellout crowd of 3,300 sat in the rain at Erftstolz Stadion to see the 1. FC Köln earn a 5:1 test-match victory Thursday over a selection of players from the Bergheim-Niederaußem region, which lies little more than a half-hour drive northwest of the Geißbockheim.
Bård Finne, who had a hat trick in Tuesday’s 11:0 test victory over Bedburger BV, got on the score sheet again Thursday. It was just the one goal for the Norwegian, though he did also set-up Philipp Hosiner who likewise continued his personal hot streak, adding to the two he contributed Tuesday and his huge equalizer against Hamburger SV on Saturday.
Kevin Vogt was the third of the effzeh trio who scored in both tests this week, though he was the first to score in today’s match, getting Köln on the board just six minutes after kickoff, heading in a Miloš Jojić delivery from a corner.
Sidebar: Let us pause a moment to dream of a resolution to last season’s inability to score off set pieces, shall we? Okay, back to business.
Anthony Modeste and Salih Özcan round out the goal-scorers list for the Bundesliga side.
And lest we rob him of his glory, Michael Schmitz of FC Hürth grabbed one for pride, honor, and duty, scoring in the 89t minute to keep the host side from leaving empty-handed.
Effzeh goals scorers Finne, Hosiner, and Vogt were all in the starting line-up. Leonardo Bittencourt, Kazuki Nagasawa, Matthias Lehmann, Miloš Jojić, Marcel Risse, Dominique Heintz, and Frederik Sørensen were the other starting outfielders. Daniel Mesenhöler got the start between the sticks.
At halftime goal scorers Özcan and Modeste came on with Marcel Hartel and Jannik Mause, replacing Hosiner, Risse, Nagasawa, and Finne.
Stefan Kühlborn of SpVg Frechen 20, who played in goal for the host side in the second half, provided several strong exhibits in his 45 minutes facing the professionals, denying both Jojić and Modeste in big moments, after stoning Mause twice in a span of four minutes early in the half.
The substituted keeper’s performance even provoked Effzeh.com‘s Thomas Reinscheid to proclaim over Twitter that “the goalkeeper of the Rhein-Erft-selection is some kind of strong!”
The match also served as a fundraiser, with all proceeds going to benefit youth-sports organizations in the region.
