Even putting the football world on pause for international break cannot stop Anthony Modeste.
The Frenchman scored twice Wednesday against amateur side TSC Euskirchen to lead the 1. FC Köln to a 5:0 test-match victory. Philipp Hosiner, Miloš Jojić, and Bård Finne accounted for the three other effzeh goals.
With four professional-squad players (Jonas Hector, Pawel Olkowski, Dusan Svento, and Yannick Gerhardt) off representing their respective nations in this week’s international action, several players from the club’s youth ranks were brought into the team to get experience with the big guys.
Timo Hübers (U21), Marcel Hartel (U21), and Jens Bauer (U19) all started the first half among a mixture of regular starters and reserves for the Bundesliga side.
Bauer, an 18-year-old defensive midfielder, moved to the 1. FC Köln from the TSC Euskirchen U17 squad in the summer of 2014.
In the second half, it was Lucas Cueto (U21), Lukas Scepanik (U21), and Anas Ouahim (U19) taking the field with a new collection of pros.
The club’s official site says 4,000 spectators were on hand for the match at Erftstadion in Eurkirchen, a town of about 55,000 residents located about a 45-minute drive south-southwest of Köln.
“We always like to play in the region and are pleased that so many spectators were there,” said coach Peter Stöger after the match. “It was a good training session. Euskirchen was well organized, but the guys tidily completed their task.”
Stöger and the guys will get right back to work with another test match Thursday against familiar 2. Bundesliga foe VfL Bochum. Gertjan Verbeek will bring his club to Franz Kremer Stadium for a 3 p.m. local time kickoff, but don’t rush to Köln for a rematch of the game that ended with the effzeh having clinched promotion to the Bundesliga, as there will be no spectators admitted to the match.
1st half: Kessler – Risse, Hübers, Heintz, Hartel – Jojic, Lehmann, Bauer, Bittencourt – Hosiner, Modeste
2nd half: Mesenhöler – Cueto, Maroh, Sörensen, Scepanik – Ouahim, Vogt, Nagasawa, Zoller – Osako, Finne
